The Kronoscope

Take a look around, see a Roman town as it once was or at the details of a medieval castle courtyard, it’s as if you were standing right there in the past! Using the Kronoscope you can see how our ancestors built and what the ruins and walls where you are standing were once like.

The unique Kronoscope developed by Kronoptik Kft. is a device similar to binoculars which you can use to look around 360 degrees into a virtual past. The device is mounted and rotates on a column and displays a high resolution, movie-film-perfect image of medieval or ancient buildings precisely in the position of the surrounding ruins, so you do not have to imagine the unimaginable: it is standing there before you. Every building, window and roof-tile is elaborated in photo-realistic detail, and the landscape is brought to life with period figures. It even comes to life: our newest model displays 3D video film to make the experience perfect.

References in Hungary: with the help of the ten installed kronoscopes you can see a reconstruction of the ruins of the Roman town of Aquincum show it as it was in AD 200, at the time of emperor Septimus Severus in the Aquincum Museum located on Szentendrei út in Budapest. The various different layouts of the castle of the Kompolti family located in Kisnána in the Mátra Hills. In the fort of Szigliget, at Lake Balaton kronoscopes show the history of the devastating explosion of 1690, caused by a thunderstorm hitting the powder tower. This episode is shown by a 3D video sequence, followed by sound effects. Two kronoscopes are located in the castle of Eger showing a 360 degrees panorama in 3D video, right before the devastating battle by the Turks. These modern-designed, devices take state-of-the-art technology into monument protection and give a completely new, 3D experience of the past. The innovative solution was awarded the Forster Gyula prize by the Minister of Culture.

We install kronoscopes to display the past at any location, at a price depending on the task to be solved, with or without coin-inserted operation. If required, we will even create the 3D virtual reconstruction of the ruins to be displayed. A kronoscope is a great attraction for museum visitors, so its price is recovered in just a few years.
